research collaboration towards a sustainable climate development strategy for the city of Weert
Weert's unique position on a sand hill presents several climate-related challenges, from scorching summers to difficulties in growing plants. Our research vision connects climate adaptation with critical areas such as sustainable energy, housing accessibility, and eco-friendly transportation. At the same time, the vision draws on Weert's rich cultural heritage as the foundation for comprehensive solutions. The aimed result is to revitalize the city smartly and attractively, breathing new life into every corner.

A culture-historical analysis of the city was one of the first steps of this research project. The three identified core values from this analysis served as a backbone for the development of an integral vision - finding synergy between smart future-resilient interventions and the heritage of the city.

The developed strategy serves as an abstract but robust canvas to form the basis of Weert's concrete climate plan. As one of the first steps of realisation, one of it’s most significant components has been proudly realised in collaboration with Polyfern landscape architects - Brightside being responsible for the architectural pieces of the plan. A perfect illustration of the vision's core concept, the transformation of “citypark Weert” to “Castlepark Nijenborgh” was honored with the 2023 BNG Bank Heritage Prize - its jury praising Weert's strong vision on heritage & climate adaptation.
"We may not be able to execute everything as they envision, but the ideas can serve as a guide for long-term plans for the city center," he says. "At least the ideas will serve as an inspiration for the canal vision we are currently developing."
